Junoon, New York, is one of the city’s finer Indian restaurants. It is so fine, in fact, that the restaurant holds a Michelin Star, and it’s easy to see why...

Upon arrival, we were shown to the Patiala Lounge where we were left to ponder the impressive cocktail menu. As soon as you enter Junoon, it’s like being transported directly to India. Sat in the lounge, surrounded by Indian furnishings, it’s difficult not to be charmed by the warm atmosphere. We sampled a delicious cocktail and as soon as we were finished, we were shown to our table.

“Junoon exceeded my expectations both through its food, and its wonderful atmosphere.”

I can only liken our table to that of having the front row at the cinema, except; our view was directly into the heart of where the magic happens – the kitchen. We felt very lucky to have such an excellent position, and it only served to enhance the experience for us.

After perusing the impressive menu, we finally made our choices. To start, we opted for the piri-piri shrimp with avocado foam and a citrus salad, as well as the Noorani kebab, which consisted of two layers of lamb and chicken accompanied by shaved fennel and a mint salad. We knew as soon as we had our first mouthful that this meal was going to be something special, and that it was. The freshness of the ingredients and the impeccable flavour combinations were outstanding.

For our main courses, we opted for the Hydrabadi chicken korma and the Masaledar lamb chops with confit potatoes and anardana-brown butter sauce. On the side, we went for the red Bhutanese rice; a cherry and pistachio stuffed naan bread as well as a dish of Daal Makhini. Every part of the meal was exceptional.

Our experience was even further enhanced by the courteousness of the staff. The team at Junoon are exceptionally warm and friendly and give you the definite impression that nothing is too much trouble. The service and timings were faultless.

Junoon created for us a fabulous culinary journey. Considering Indian is one of my favourite cuisines, I can be quite a tough customer when it comes to pleasing me. However, Junoon exceeded my expectations both through its food, and its wonderful atmosphere. We will certainly be returning, hopefully in the not too distant future, and would thoroughly recommend you also put aside some time if in New York to experience Junoon for yourself. You won’t regret it.
