To summarise MOMO, the words ‘culinary hipster hangout’ spring to mind. I have been visiting this restaurant since my very first trip to Amsterdam many years ago, and this has remained one of my personal favourites in the City. Fortunately, my latest visit was no exception, with the atmosphere, the service and of course the food all failing to disappoint.
Once again, we had a memorable dining experience, MOMO offers a fun, bustling atmosphere in its restaurant and bar, serving Asian inspired dishes - primarily sushi - all of which are beautifuly crafted and wonderfully presented. If you’re lucky enough to be seated in the right area, you can watch as the chefs create their culinary craft in the kitchen. We would also recommend arriving ahead of your reservation to enjoy a cocktail in their bar area, where on certain nights a DJ is present to entertain; which is exactly what we chose to do on this occasion.
As an aperitif, I chose the Vondelpark Martini which was mixed with Bombay Sapphire gin, St Germain, lemongrass liqueur, cucumber, lemon and rose syrup. My partner opted for the Koi Samui Mule which was mixed with FAIR quinoa vodka infused with green tea coconut and MOMO pimento bitters, topped with gingerbeer and lime. These cocktails were exquisite, and perfectly crafted.

As our first course, we decided to go for a selection of their sushi dishes, and after much deliberation, we chose the lobster and mango roll with creamy wasabi, the spicy tuna roll, and the salmon, avocado and asparagus roll. Each were beautifully created and presented and we enjoyed six pieces of each, which between two is actually quite a task to manage, but we got there in the end and it left us in great anticipation for our main courses.
For our main courses, I decided on the roasted rack of lamb, which was glazed with apricot miso and served with cauliflower puree. This dish contained many beautiful textures and a wonderful marriage of flavours that worked extremely well together. My partner opted for the fillet of beef, which was served with hijiji seaweed and teriyaki sauce. As a side dish, we enjoyed the coriander and ginger rice, which tasted divine and complemented our dishes wonderfully.
To accompany our meal we did enjoy a bottle of the 2014, Château de Chamirey, Mercurey Marquis de Jouennes, Burgundy, France, which was a splendid full bodied fruity wine.
MOMO has always impressed us; we cannot fault it and cannot wait to return. We thoroughly recommend that you visit MOMO when you’re next in Amsterdam, as we’re sure you will not be disappointed.
